Russia 50 Kopeks 1924 to 1927
Russia 50 Kopeks 1924 to 1927

No coin enthusiast should be without copies of The Standard Catalog of World Coins, editted by George Cuhaj, formerly by Chester Krause and Clifford Mishler. These catalogs capture enormous amounts of numismatic (coin collector) research in one, concentrated location. They list every coin from every country in the world, including the United States, and give endless detail by coin type, variety, and grade. Without such catalogs, CoinQuest would be sunk. There is easily 1,000 times more detail available in Standard Catalogs than what you find here on CoinQuest.

When Ryan's request came in to CoinQuest, it took about 20 seconds to locate and evaluate his nice 50 kopek coin using the Standard Catalog. That's even better than Google!

These coins with a blacksmith and anvil contain 0.289 troy ounces of silver, which gives them immediate value due to precious metal. Over and above the silver value, collector demand makes nice specimens, like the one in our picture, even more valuable. The listings below give very approximate catalog values.

worn: $10 US dollars
average circulated: $20
well preserved: $30
fully uncirculated: $60

If you are interested in purchasing a Standard Catalog, a good place to do so is ShopNumismaster.

Requester description: 1925 This is clearly a Soviet coin but it shows no mint mark or value on it. It pictures a man with a sledge hammer about to hit an anvil. On the back (or maybe front) it has the hammer and sickle placed top middle sitting on top of the globe surrounded by a wreath and what appears to be a sun rising underneath it with Russian inscription running around the outside of the coin. Since I only have a US english keyboard I cannot type in all the letters. Along the edge (between front and back) of the coin it has an inscription running around the whole coin.
