An image of Francisco Hernández de Córdoba (1475-1526), founder of Nicaragua, appears on the obverse ('heads' side) of these coins. A sunlit mountain range appears on the reverse. There are other Nicaraguan coins with different patterns, but this page applies only to those with patterns like the one in our picture.
