Portugal 3, 5, and 10 Reis 1723 to 1749
Portugal 3, 5, and 10 Reis 1723 to 1749

Neat coin!

These were minted in copper under the rule of John (Ioannes) V of Portugal, who had the nickname 'The Magnanimous'. He had a long and successful reign - he invested resources in opening mines in the New World, which brought home plenty of riches to the mainland.

These coins are pretty big and hefty, and quite decorative - I like them! They come in three denominations:

3 (III) REIS: 25 mm diameter
5 (V) REIS: 27 mm
10 (X) REIS: 31 mm

For common dates, the values are low in worn condition. However, as the grade of the coin improves, values rise sharply, and some rarer dates can be quite valuable.

Here are some approximate catalog values for these coins (common dates).

5 REIS
worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $25
well preserved: $60

5 REIS
worn: $6 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $30
well preserved: $65

10 REIS
worn: $6 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $35
well preserved: $75

There are some better dates. The prices after the date below is the approximate catalog value for average circulated coins.

3 REIS:
1723: $75 average circulated
1733: $70

5 REIS:
1723, 1724, 1732: $55 average circulated
1726: $300
1742: $70

10 REIS:
1723: $125 average circulated
1724: $75
1726: $175
1735, 1737, 1742: $55
1746: $70
1747: $70
1748: $85
