Canada Commemorative Voyageur Dollar 1935 to 1987
Canada Commemorative Voyageur Dollar 1935 to 1987

Nice coin, Gery -- Canadian silver dollars with the canoe reverse started in 1935 and continued through 1987. In 1937 the George V front was replaced with George VI, and then in 1953 Elizabeth II graced the front side of the coin.

Silver content goes like this:

Before 1967: 0.60 troy ounces silve
After 1967: no silver, coin is made of nickel
1972: some coins are made of nickel and some of 0.38 ounces silver

To find the Base Value (BV) of your silver coin, multiply the current price of silver (see kitco.com) by the number of troy ounces in your coin.

Catalog values change with time, as follows

There are several different nuance varieties in Voyageur dollars, and you might want to find a knowledgeable collector or a coin dealer to carefully inspect your coin for subtle varitions. The *big boys* of the variations are the 1947 with a small maple leaf near the 7, which catalogs for $150 in average circulated condition, and the 1966 coin with small beads which catalogs for $1000 in average circulated.
