Guyana ~ Guiana Guyana (British Guiana and West Indies) 4 Pence 1891 to 1945
Guyana ~ Guiana Guyana (British Guiana and West Indies) 4 Pence 1891 to 1945

Great Britain grouped several of their colonies in what is now the Caribbean Sea and northern South America for coinage purposes. The annotation 'British Guiana and West Indies' applies to today's Guyana and several islands in the Caribbean (shown roughly in the map). Later, the inclusion of 'West Indies' on the coins was dropped and only 'British Guiana' remained (shown in the small coin picture).

As if the Guyana-Guiana spelling and West Indies annotations weren't enough to confuse collectors, the portrait on the front of these 4 pence coins changed with the reigning British monarch. This is normal for British coin, but it means your coin may not look exactly like our picture. Queen Victoria appears on coins dated 1891 to 1901, the King Edward and two King George (V and VI) follow.

All these coins are made of silver and that accounts for collector value when the coin is in well worn condition. As condition improves, collector demand goes up and so does value. Here is a summary of approximate catalog values.

4 PENCE 1891 TO 1901 (VICTORIA)
worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $15
well preserved: $30
fully uncirculated: $80

4 PENCE 1903 TO 1910 (EDWARD VII)
worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $12
well preserved: $30
fully uncirculated: $90

4 PENCE 1911 TO 1936 (GEROGE V)
worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $20
well preserved: $50
fully uncirculated: $100
4 pence dated 1936 are especially common and are worth about one-half these values
4 pence dated 1923 are more rare and are worth about three times these values

4 PENCE 1938 TO 1945 (GEROGE VI)
worn: $3 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $4
well preserved: $5
fully uncirculated: $20

Always apply the concepts shown on our Important Terminology page when interpreting these catalog values.
