Canada 50 Cents 1959 to 1992
Canada 50 Cents 1959 to 1992

These nice looking 50 cent pieces were issued in Canada between 1959 and 1992. Prior coins have a reverse pattern that is slightly different.

After 1967 these coins are made of nickel so they lose their silver value from 1968 on. Post-1987 coins are worth face value, but a collector might pay a few US dollars for a fully uncirculated specimen, like the one in our picture.

Coins minted between 1959 and 1967 contain 0.300 troy ounces of silver, and this fact gives them substantial value. At today's silver price of $32 US dollars per troy ounce (it changes daily, look it up at, that's 0.3 x 32 = $9.60 US dollars per coin. Not bad!

The silver value applies to all pre-1968 coins no matter what their condition. If you have a nice uncirculated example, a collector will pay a few dollars over silver price.

Hi Caroline -- Yes, QE II has reigned for so long, the coin makers have to keep changing her portrait to keep up with the times. The coin's value stays the same. - CoinQuest (Paul)
