Romania Leu and 2 and 5 Lei (Carlo l as Domnul and Rege) 1880 to 1901
Romania Leu and 2 and 5 Lei (Carlo l as Domnul and Rege) 1880 to 1901

Look at the *gorgeous* Romanian 5 lei in our picture. It is in fully uncirculated condition and therefore commands a very high price. It is on sale now at PATER Munzen und Medaillen in Ense, Germany for 1850 euros (about $2400 US dollars). This is a good price for such a nice looking coin. We have included a large close-up of Pater's coin below so you can see the level of quality necessary to reach top prices in rare coins. Collectors are always looking for the best specimen possible to add to their collections. The same coin in worse condition is worth far less.

See our Terminology page for more information about pricing coins based on catalog value.

Carol I ruled Romania as Prince (Domnul) from 1866 to 1881 and as King (Rege) from 1881 to 1914. This page applies to coins with Carol's likeness on one side and a crowned, draped, and supported (the lions) coat-of-arms on the other. There are other patterns used during this time period, but this page applies only to ones that look like the picture.
