Mexico Oaxaca 8 Reales 1812
During the Mexican War of Independence, emergency coinage was cast in an Oaxaca blacksmith's shop in an attempt to ward off the insurgents and remain loyal to Spain. It did not work. The Royalists in Oaxaca surrendered soon thereafter. What remains for coin collectors is a very rare cast coin, as shown in the picture.
The pictured coin comes from a Goldberg auction in 2008 where it sold for $20000 US dollars. The Goldberg coin is in amazing condition. The Standard Catalog of World Coins does not even attempt to place a value on coins in this beautiful, well-preserved condition, but reports only:
worn: $1500 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $6000
If you have one of these coins, consider sending a picture to CoinQuest and we will be able to give you a decent idea of value. To send a picture, start and e-mail exchange using the Contact Us link.
As always, CoinQuest is grateful to Larry and Ira Goldberg for letting us use the image of this amazing coin.
