Token: Great Britain Conder Guard and Glory 1790 to 1800
Token: Great Britain Conder Guard and Glory 1790 to 1800

Conder tokens create a fascinating area of numismatics (coin collecting) that is rising in popularity as the Internet and other technologies make them more and more accessible.

Conder Tokens, also known as 18th Century Provincial Tokens, were first minted In 1787 in response to British coin shortages in outlying areas. Conder Tokens are named after James Conder who was an early collector and cataloged these interesting coins. They are copper coins (usually pennies and half pennies) minted by towns, businesses, and organizations of all types to meet a need for low denomination coinage that was not being provided by government. Thousands of varieties of tokens were minted, many are beautiful and intricate works of art. Do a general search on CoinQuest and you will see a small, representative collection of Conder tokens.

The token in our picture comes from Muenzen & Medaillen, GmbH in Weil am Rhein, Germany, where it sold recently for 50 euros, about $65 US dollars. This gives an idea of value.

worn: $10 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $35
well preserved (like the picture): $100
fully uncirculated: $400

These are approximate catalog values for such tokens. Use our Important Terminology page for converting catalog values to actual values.

CoinQuest thanks Muenzen & Medaillen for use of their photo. It's a nice one!

Requester description: 1794 -'Deal Half Penny Token 1794' -'The Guard & Glory of Great Brittain' -(around the rim it reads-)'PAY AT RICHARD LUNG LIBRARY' *there is also an X with a dot on either side, probably to separate the words LIBRARY and PAY, since it goes around the rim
