Brazil 20, 37 1/2, 40, and 80 Reis 1823 to 1832

PETRUS on this coin is King Pedro I of Brazil who ruled from 1822 to 1831. After 1831 it is Pedro II with the same inscriptions. The complete inscriptions are:

PETRUS I (or II) D G CONST IMP ET PERP BRAS DEF
IN HOC SIGNO VINCES

It is almost impossible to find well preserved specimens of these old copper coins. Value skyrockets as condition improves. Here are some typical catalog values that apply to all dates.

20 REIS
worn: $4 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $20
well preserved: $50

37 1/2 REIS
worn: $15 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $100
well preserved: $300

40 REIS
worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $20
well preserved: $50

80 REIS
worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $20
well preserved: $50

Eye appeal makes a big difference on these coins. Coins with tainted appeal will be worth less.
