Medieval Netherlands Brabant Ecu and Liard Coinage (Philip II) 1555 to 1598
Medieval Netherlands Brabant Ecu and Liard Coinage (Philip II) 1555 to 1598

The ecu silver coins of King Philip II come from the Roman Empire medieval state of Brabant, located in the region of today's Netherlands and Belgium. They appear in 1/10, 1/5, 1/2, and 1 ecu denominations, with weights and diameters roughly like this:

1/10 ECU: 3 grams, 25 mm diameter
1/5 ECU: 6 grams, 28 mm diameter
1/2 ECU: 13 grams, 35 mm diameter
1 ECU: 32 grams, 42 mm diameter

Copper liards are also found with similiar inscriptions and design patterns. Evaluating these coins, both copper and silver, is difficult. Each coin stands on its own merits, and just about all of them are worn to a frazzle. The larger, more well preserved coins will be worth more. A very, very approximate estimate runs like this:

worn: $60 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $150
well preserved: $500

If you have such a coin in good condition, take it to a knowledgeable collector or a coin dealer for an in-person appraisal.
