Token: Netherlands Bureau of Finance 1562
Token: Netherlands Bureau of Finance 1562

Even back in 1652 you could not get away from the tax man! This is an old jeton (token) from the Southern Netherlands as part of the Holy Roman Empire. It shows King Philip on the front and the Adoration of the Magi on the back (MONSTRANT REGIBUS ASTRA VIAM means STARS SHOW KINGS THE WAY in Latin).

The jeton in our picture is in gorgeous condition. It sold at auction by John Elson and His Sons in Brussels for $180 US dollars back in 2007. A more worn example would be worth far less, e.g.,

worn: $20 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $60
well preserved: $100
fully uncirculated: $220

(Note to David: This is the closest match we could find to your inquiry. If you had supplied descriptions of the devices, not only the inscriptions, we might have found a different coin.)
