Ancient Rome Antoninus Pius Dupondius with WRL (Counterfeit) 154AD and 155AD
Ancient Rome Antoninus Pius Dupondius with WRL (Counterfeit) 154AD and 155AD

Normally this Antoninus Pius, c.154-155, dupondius from Ancient Rome would be worth a tidy sum, about $300 in well preserved condition. But this specimen has the letters WRL stamped into it. Uh oh!

'WRL' stands for 'Westair Reproductions Ltd', a leading supplier of museum reproductions in Birmingham, UK. As such, the value shifts from a rare collectible coin to a spiffy gift. They sell for a few US dollars.

The coin in our primary picture (with front and back, from forumancientcoins.com) is the WRL piece. The secondary picture shows a pensive Britannia on the reverse side of a genuine coin.
