Early Byzantine Solidus Heraclius & Heraclius Constantine 610AD to 640AD
Early Byzantine Solidus Heraclius & Heraclius Constantine 610AD to 640AD

Heraclius his son Heraclius Constantine ruled the Byzantine Empire from Constantinople during the early to mid-600s AD. These beautiful gold solidus coins weigh in the neighborhood of 4.3 to 4.5 grams and are highly sought by collectors. The one in our picture comes from Beast Coins and is one of the many varieties known to exist. There is a comprehensive summary of these coins over at WildWinds.

Checking over the recent auctions for these coins, typical catalog values run like this:

worn: $300 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $500
well preserved: $800

Referring to the Important Terminology page, base on these catalog values, collectors usually pay around $400 to $500 for decent coins, and dealers would pay perhaps $250 to $350 to buy one from you. The mark-up, of course, allows the dealership to make a profit and stay in business.
