If you hang around CoinQuest a little, you'll know that I like toned coins. This big, bold 8 reales from Chile is toned with rainbow colors and I think it looks great. Most collectors (sigh) prefer 'white' coins without toning.

The 8 reales in our picture was sold by Stack's Bowers in 2011 for $475 US dollars. The detail in the coin is quite sharp. We have included a large picture at the bottom of this page for closer inspection.

The denomination is apparent on the side opposite the eagle. The 'R' on the right means 'reales' and the number of reales appears on the left. Typical catalog values run like this:
