Chile 1/2, 1, 2, and 8 Reales (Condor) 1837 to 1852
Chile 1/2, 1, 2, and 8 Reales (Condor) 1837 to 1852

If you hang around CoinQuest a little, you'll know that I like toned coins. This big, bold 8 reales from Chile is toned with rainbow colors and I think it looks great. Most collectors (sigh) prefer 'white' coins without toning.

The 8 reales in our picture was sold by Stack's Bowers in 2011 for $475 US dollars. The detail in the coin is quite sharp. We have included a large picture at the bottom of this page for closer inspection.

The denomination is apparent on the side opposite the eagle. The 'R' on the right means 'reales' and the number of reales appears on the left. Typical catalog values run like this:

1/2 REAL
worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $35
well preserved: $70
fully uncirculated: $150
1/2 reals dated before 1843 are more rare; triple these values
1/2 reals dated 1848 are very rare and catalog at $200 in average circulated condition

1 REAL
worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $35
well preserved: $70
fully uncirculated: $250
1 reals dated before 1843 are more rare; triple these values
1 reals dated 1847 and 1849 are more rare; double these values

2 REALES
worn: $8 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $25
well preserved: $50
fully uncirculated: $250
2 reales dated before 1843 are more rare; triple these values

8 REALES
worn: $40 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $125
well preserved: $700
fully uncirculated: $2500
8 reales dated 1837 are so rare the coin catalogs do not have enough information to estimate value
8 reales dated 1840 are very rare and catalog at $2000 in average circulated condition

The values above are inflated catalog values. Use our Important Terminology page to convert catalog values to actual buy and sell values.
