Chile 1 Peso and 1/2, 1, and 2 Reales 1817 to 1834
Chile 1 Peso and 1/2, 1, and 2 Reales 1817 to 1834

Chile used the obelisk and volcano pattern on both peso and reales silver coins between 1817 and 1834. The denomination is inside the wreath over the volcano. Our main picture (upper left) show a real, and the secondary picture (lower right) shows a peso. All these coins are quite valuable. The catalog values below are very approximate, and desirable coins can easily exceed these values.

1 PESO
worn: $80 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $450
well preserved: $1000
fully uncirculated: $4000
pesos dated 1817 with 'centered Y' are quite rare and catalog over $2000 in average circulated condition, much more in well preserved condition
pesos dated 1821 are somewhat rare; double the values above

1/2 REAL
worn: $15 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $50
well preserved: $100
fully uncirculated: $400

1 REAL
worn: $18 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $75
well preserved: $200
fully uncirculated: $800

2 REALES
worn: $25 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $140
well preserved: $300
fully uncirculated: $1000

The 1 real in our picture comes from Dr. Busso Peus Nachfolger in Frankfurt, Germany, who sold it for 190 euros (about $250 US dollars) in a 2011 auction. Thank you, Dr. Peus, for use of your coin photo.

The 1 peso in our picture comes from an interested CoinQuest reader. It sold for a whopping $20000 in a 2014 auction. Many thanks.

Comments

Actually, pesos dated 1817 are the most common with the exception of the type with the 'Y' centered over the obelisk. Approximately 80% of the peso population is dated 1817, but with the 'Y' to the left of the obelisk.
