Germany Hannover Thaler and 2 Thaler 1624 to 1670
Germany Hannover Thaler and 2 Thaler 1624 to 1670

Hello Christian -- Since you describe your coin with 'mirror like surfaces' you most certainly have a modern reproduction of this grand old thaler from the German city of Hannover. Your modern coin is made of silver and is worth its weight in silver, about $30 at today's prices. See our secondary picture.

If you had a genuine Hannover thaler dating back to the 1600s, it would be worth a bundle. The one in our primary picture was sold by Westfalische Auktionsgesellschaft in Arnsberg, Germany for 4500 euros (about $6000 US dollars) back in 2007. It would be worth more today.

The lion, towers, and flower-in-gate are typical for Hannover pieces. The same pattern was used on thalers and double thalers back to the 1620s, although Ferdinand ruled, not Leopold. Here are some typical catalog values for these amazing coins.

worn: $500 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $2200
well preserved: $6000

worn: $500 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $2000
well preserved: $5000

Obviously, if you have such a coin you must take it to a knowledgeable collector or a professional coin dealer to get an in-person appraisal.

CoinQuest thanks Westfalische for use of their coin image. It's a beauty!
