Great Britain Pence and Shilling of Charles I 1625 to 1649
Great Britain Pence and Shilling of Charles I 1625 to 1649

The long-haired king on this coin is Charles I, who reigned in Great Britain from 1625 to 1649. He issued many different coins and they are avidly collected today. This page gives some general ideas of value for silver coins with the king's likeness on the front and a crowned and quartered shield on the back. They come in 6 denominations:

I - PENNY (about 13 mm diameter)
II - 2 PENCE (half groat, about 16 mm)
III - 3 PENCE (about 18 mm)
IV - 4 PENCE (groat, about 20 mm)
VI - 6 PENCE (about 24 mm)
XII - SHILLING (12 pence, about 30 mm)

The coin in our main picture is a shilling (XII) with an oval shield in scrollwork. Our secondary picture shows a more plain, and more common, shield design. Further, the king faces right on some coins and left on other coins.

There is a great web site for attributing ancient and medieval coins like this: WildWinds.com. We found the spiffy coin in our main picture on WildWinds and they tell us it comes from Ira and Larry Goldberg, Auctioneers. CoinQuest thanks the Goldbergs for use of their coin image.

As you might suspect, assigning values to these old coins depends very strongly on the individual coin itself -- its wear, eye appeal, and potential damage -- so catalog values are extremely approximate. Each coin stands on its own merits. If you have a nice looking Charles I coin, seek out a knowledgeable collector or a professional coin dealer for an in-person appraisal. The listings below are very, very approximate. There are also minor variations in these coins that can add significant value. These variations are beyond the scope of the CoinQuest forum, and must be attributed and evaluated with more in-depth research material.
