Denmark 1, 2 and 5 Ore 1926 to 1940
Denmark 1, 2 and 5 Ore 1926 to 1940

The crowned design with the X and two intertwined Cs is the royal monogram of King Christian X of Denmark. These coins were minted in bronze from 1926 until 1940, when scarce copper supplies led to coinage in zinc and aluminum for some years during and quite a few years after the second World War.

The 'o' (lowercase 'o') found in the name of these coins is a character found in the Danish, Faroese and Norwegian languages. Its pronunciation is basically impossibly to describe, but rest assured that most coin websites will use the spelling 'Ore' to help most people search for the coins.

1 ore is one-hundredt of a 'krone' or 'crown', the currency of Denmark. One ore is now worth so little that the only circulating Danish coin remaining in the are denomination is the 50-are coin, which is generally regarded as worthless, and can't even be used in many vending machines.

Though these coins are generally low in value, there are some dates with a low mintage, and these reach decent collectible values. The king of the series is the 2-are dated 1926 (see below). See the list after the common date values of each coin denomination for the *better dates*.

1 ORE BEFORE 1934:
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $1
well preserved: $6
fully uncirculated: $30
coins dated 1926 catalog at $10 when average circulated
coins dated 1927 with a small 'N' above the 'Ø' (not 'HCN') catalog at $15 when average circulated
coins dated 1933 catalog at $55 when fully uncirculated

1 ORE AFTER 1933:
worn: less than $1
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: $1
fully uncirculated: $6
triple these values for well preserved and fully uncirculated coins dated 1934 or 1935.
double these values for fully uncirculated coins dated 1936

2 ORE BEFORE 1938:
worn: less than $1
average circulated: $1
well preserved: $5
fully uncirculated: $40
coins dated 1926 are rare and catalog at $125 when average circulated, $1200 when fully uncirculated
coins dated 1927 with a small 'N' above the 'Ø' (not 'HCN') catalog at only $5 when average circulated, but at $250 when fully uncirculated
coins dated 1930 catalog at $125 when fully uncirculated
coins dated 1932 catalog at $5 when average circulated, $225 when fully uncirculated

2 ORE AFTER 1937:
worn: less than $1
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: $2
fully uncirculated: $8

5 ORE BEFORE 1936:
worn: less than $1
average circulated: $2
well preserved: $18
fully uncirculated: $125
coins dated 1928 are common, divide the above values by 2

coins dated 1926 are only known from two specimens, one of which sold at $8600 - beware of counterfeits
coins dated 1927 catalog at $15 when average circulated, $1000 when fully uncirculated -
coins dated 1935 catalog at $10 when average circulated, $200 when fully uncirculated

Ericha's well preserved coin dated 1927 would catalog around $40. Don't worry - the hole is supposed to be there! Unless there are actually two holes in the coin, then it would in fact be damage, rendering the coin worthless. I hope there is only the one in the middle!

5 ORE AFTER 1935:
worn: less than $1
average circulated: $1
well preserved: $4
fully uncirculated 1936 and 1937: $50
fully uncirculated 1938: $25
fully uncirculated 1939 and 1940: $8

Remember to read our 'Important Terminology' page on the top left in order to properly interpret the catalog values quoted above.
