Ancient Greece Rhodes with Helios, Rose and Rose Bud 316BC to 305BC
Ancient Greece Rhodes with Helios, Rose and Rose Bud 316BC to 305BC

In Greek mythology, Rhodos was the goddess of the island of Rhodes and wife of Helios, personification of the sun god. You can make out the Rhodos name (in Greek) above the rose and bud on the reverse side. The obverse ('heads' side) shows Helios himself.

The pattern of Helios and rose with bud appears often on coins of ancient Greece. The coin in our picture is a silver didrachm which comes from Roma Numismatics in London. CoinQuest thanks Roma for use of their coin image.

The Helios, rose, and bud pattern appears on many coins from ancient Greece. Our secondary picture shows a few examples.

While each coin stands on its own merits, coins that resemble those in our pictures carry catalog values roughly as shown below. Use the table to get the weights of the various denominations. If you have a nice looking coin like this, be sure to bring it to a knowledgeable collector or professional coin dealer for an in-person appraisal.
