Medal: Netherlands Wilhelmina and Hendrik 1901 to 1934
Collecting medals is a great pasttime. Medals are not coins, so the prices, in general, are lower. Further, since medals do not have to be produced by the millions, they can sport wonderful, high-relief artwork, much of which is very beautiful. Medals have been made for all sorts of significant historical people, places, and events, giving tremendous breadth to possible collecting themes and challenges. Finally, with the Internet exposing more and more people to the beauty and artistry of medals, their values will likely go up.
Colin has a medal celebrating Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and her husband, Duke Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, whose name was changed to Hendrik. Royal couples have always been a popular theme, and this couple is no different. They reigned in the Netherlands from 1901 to 1934.
Catalog values of these medals are not high. Some typical examples are shown in our picture below. All designs carry essentially the same overall values, with condition having the most effect on value. Medals made of silver or gold will be more valuable than those made of copper, bronze, brass, or pewter. Add the value of precious metal to these figures:
WILHELMINA & HENDRIK MEDALS MADE OF NON-PRECIOUS METAL:
worn: $15 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $30
well preserved: $60
fully uncirculated: $80
Catalog values are not actual values. To understand how they work, please read our Important Terminology page.
