Poland 3 Groschen 1587 to 1632
Poland 3 Groschen 1587 to 1632

King Zygmunt (Sigismund) III Vasa ruled Poland and neighboring territories from 1587 to 1632. One of his famous portraits shows a very pronounced ruffled collar, and this portrait appears on many of the coins he issued.

The coin that Andrew has emphasizes Sigismund's position as monarch of a united Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth, indicated by a Polish eagle to the left and a Lithuanian mounted knight to the right. The III on the coin indicates its denominiation: 3 groschen. There are several variations of the inscriptions, and in a few issues the king faces right instead of left.

For value, these coins generally follow these catalog values:

worn: $10 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $100
well preserved: $500

Pristine examples of these coins have sold at auction for well over $1000, so if you have a nice-look specimen, take it to a knowledgeable collector or reliable coin dealer for an in-person appraisal.

Factors affecting value are discussed on our Important Terminology page. If you have not read it, please do!
