Medal: Great Britain George V Silver Jubilee (including South Africa) 1935
Medal: Great Britain George V Silver Jubilee (including South Africa) 1935

Fergus has the South African version of this old medal from the Royal Mint of Great Britain. The more common version, with inscription STET FORTUNA DOMUS 'Let fortune stay at home', is shown in our primary picture. These medals were issued to commemorate the silver jubilee (25th year) of King George V's reign, from 1910 to 1935.

Just because it's a silver jubilee does not mean these medals were issued in silver. Some were, but most are made of bronze, and there are even a few gold versions. An extra large gold medal, with 124 grams of 22 karat gold (3.6 troy ounces) sold for $8500 US dollars in a Heritage auction during 2012. CoinQuest thanks Heritage Auctions for use of their coin photo. What a beauty!

But, alas, most people do not have the super-sized gold version. They have normal-sized medals in bronze or silver. Here are some typical values for these medals, both the STET FORUNA version and the SUID AFRIKA version.

worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circualted: $10

fully uncirculated: $50

The values for the silver medal correspond to a silver price of about $20 US dollars per troy ounce. If silver goes up or down, the prices fluctuate accordingly.
