France 1/16, 1/8, 1/2, and 1 Ecu 1724 and 1725
France 1/16, 1/8, 1/2, and 1 Ecu 1724 and 1725

The coin in our picture is a 1/2 ecu sold by Jean Elsen et ses Fils in Brussels for 130 euros (about $210 US dollars) in a 2006 auction. The coin would bring more today. This gives a very rough idea of the value of such coins, but it is a rough, rough estimate.

When you look at the coin catalogs for old French coins from Louis (LUD) XIV and XV, you see many, many variations of basically the same coin. Our CoinQuest forum cannot support enough detail to do these coins justice. There is easily 1000 times more information in a good coin catalog than on this web site.

Extremely rough estimates run like this:

1/16 ECU (16 mm diameter)
worn: $35 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $300
well preserved: $700
fully uncirculated: $1200

1/8 ECU (24 mm diameter)
worn: $25 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $220
well preserved: $540
fully uncirculated: $1200

1/2 ECU (30 mm diameter)
worn: $100 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $600
well preserved: $1200
fully uncirculated: $2400

1 ECU (38 mm diameter)
worn: $150 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $750
well preserved: $1500
fully uncirculated: $4000

If you have a nice looking example of this coin, be sure to take it to a knowledgeable collector or professional coin dealer for an in-person inspection. There are many subtle variations of these coins that can affect value.
