India has issued nice, large, collectible commemorative coins in 10, 20, 50, 75, and 100 rupee denominations since 1969. The coins come with many different patterns (our example is the 1976 10 rupees). The 1969 10 rupee has dates 1860 and 1948 and bears a likeness of Mahtma Gandhi. Be careful, some of these coins are made of silver and some are not. The silver ones are more valuable:

The term 'BV' above means 'base value,' or the value of the silver the coin contains. To find BV, multiply the silver content (see below) by the current price of silver (available at kitco.com).

10 RUPEES
1969, 1970, 1972, 1973: 0.362 troy ounces silver
all other dates: no silver content

20 RUPEES
1973: 0.482 troy ounces silver
all other dates: no silver content

50 RUPEES
1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979: 0.558 troy ounces silver
1997, 2000: 0.362 troy ounces silver
all other dates: no silver content

75 RUPEES
2010: 0.563 troy ounces silver

100 RUPEES
1980: 0.563 troy ounces silver
1981 (food): 0.563 ounces
1981 (child): 0.867 ounces
all other dates: 0.563 ounces silver
