Turkey 1 and 2 Kurush 1839 to 1861
You can easily see the Hijri date 1255AH near the bottom of the side with several lines of Arabic writing and without the toughra (the right side in our picture). The toughra is the large central figure with the three almost-vertical lines that sweep downward, circling, and to the right on the front of the coin. Below the toughra is a small numeric figure which gives the year after 1255AH the coin was minted. So each of these coins have an accession year of 1255AH, the year King Abdul Mejid started his reign, plus a regnal year, the number of years into his reign that the coin was minted. 1255AH is 1839AD.
These dates are important, because some regnal years are more valuable than others. We have a similar coin with accession year 1293AH at this CoinQuest link.
When preparing this page, we noted that auction results for these coins in good condition exceeded the catalog values by quite a bit. For worn coins the catalogs are correct. For well preserved and fully uncirculated coins, the catalogs are low. We have adjusted our listings accordingly.
