Hong Kong Hong Kong Dollar (Fakes are possible) 1866 to 1868
Hong Kong Hong Kong Dollar (Fakes are possible) 1866 to 1868

These are valuable coins, Joe! Minted for just a few years at the Hong Kong mint, they are very sought after by collectors today. The coins are struck in 90% pure silver, and genuine specimens weigh 26.96-27.25 grams.

As with almost any rare and valuable coin, there are fakes out there. When it comes to coins of this caliber, only deal with sellers that you know and trust. The values are about the same for all three years, as noted below:

worn: $150 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $425
well preserved: $675
fully uncirculated: $1700

The 1867 date is special in that some of the dies that were used to strike these coins were reused from the year 1866. The year was altered by re-carving the 6 into a 7. On some coins, a faint outline of the '6' will still be visible under the seven. These are known under the somewhat technical term 1867/6 overdate. They command a premium - multiply the above values by 1.5

The coin in our primary picture (showing both front and back) sold for $500 US dollars in a 2014 auction by Stack's Bowers and Ponterio.

As always, coins that are damaged will be worth much less. For minor damage, divide the above values by 4. For severe damage, divide the above values by 20.

Please read our Important Terminology page found at the top left in order to properly interpret these catalog values.
