Brazil 4000 and 6400 reis 1832 and 1833
Brazil 4000 and 6400 reis 1832 and 1833

Ann, that's a rare and valuable coin you have there, if it's genuine. It could be a reproduction made as part of a cheap piece of jewelry, or it could be a genuine coin set into a nice piece of jewelry. It would be wise to take the coin to a coin shop, where a professional numismatist can take a look at it, and hopefully determine it to be genuine. When it comes to rare and valuable coins, only deal with sellers you know and trust.

These two gold denominations, 4000 and 6400 reis, were made when King Pedro II of Brazil was very young. He was born in 1825, making him just seven and eight years old when these coins were issued with his likeness! Not many were made, and this keeps the prices high today. Though made of gold, the value is primarily in the coin itself, not the precious metal.

The amazing coin in our picture comes from Baldwin's in London where it sold for $2400 in a 2010 auction. CoinQuest thanks Baldwin's for use of their coin photo. It's a beauty!

4000 REIS (8.20 grams)
average circulated: $7,500 US dollars approximate catalog value
well preserved: $12,500

4000 reis dated 1832 are very rare. Two known specimens in fully uncirculated condition were each sold for an average of $16,500.

6400 REIS (14.34 grams)
average circulated: $850
well preserved: $1650
fully uncirculated: $2500
6400 reis with 'AZEVEDO' inscribed below the bust of the young king (like in this picture) are scarce - multiply the above values by 2.

These are catalog values - refer to our Important Terminology page found at the top left in order to properly interpret these values.
