Great Britain (Cromwell, Commonwealth) Shilling, 1/2 Crown, and Crown (Fakes are possible) 1658 to 1660
That's a major coin, LLaz. If it is genuine, it is worth a ton of money. The amazing coin in our main picture is a pristine specimen of this old silver crown from the time of Oliver Cromwell (1599 to 1658). It was auctioned in 2014 by Heritage Auctions where it sold for a cool $9000 US dollars. Other coins in similar condition and similar top-shelf auctions tip well over the $10000 mark.
But watch out. Counterfeiters don't make fakes of inexpensive coins. They pick the big ones to copy, and this coin is a big one. The secondary picture (with the shaded background) is a modern replica of a Cromwell Crown from one Chard web pages. Chard craftily calls such items 'Coin Replicas and Patterns' or CRAP for short.
If you think you have a genuine coin, take it to a knowledgeable collector or professional coin dealer for an in-person appraisal. The catalog values below are very (VERY!) approximate.
SHILLING (24 mm diameter)
worn: $400 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $1800
well preserved: $3600
HALF CROWN (32 mm diameter)
worn: $500 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $2800
well preserved: $4800
CROWN (42 mm diameter)
worn: $2000 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $4800
well preserved: $6600
crowns with an anchor mint mark are worth about twice these values
Measure the diameter of your coin to determine denomination. Shilling, half crown, and crown all have the same inscriptions and patterns.
As always, CoinQuest thanks Heritage and Chard for use of their coin images.
