Medal: Austria War (Die Kriegsmedaille) 1873
Medal: Austria War (Die Kriegsmedaille) 1873

Franz (or Francis) Joseph I started his reign as Emperor of Austria and Apostolic King of Hungary on December 2, 1848. Twenty five years later, in 1873, he issued this war medal for those who served in various campaigns, all the way up to World War I.

According to this Wikipedia page, the kriegsmedaille was awarded to all military personnel of Imperial and Royal armed forces in one or more campaigns of 1848, 1849, 1859, 1864, 1866, 1869, 1878, 1882, and the Chinese Boxer Rebellion, 1900-1901.

These medals are made of bronze. There are a few made of silver-coated zinc. All carry about the same value.

You can find these medals for sale on many Internet auction sites, usually selling for $10 US dollars or less. But almost all kriegsmedaille you see for sale are beat to a pulp. If you can find one in good condition, the value goes up:

worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $10
well preserved: $20
fully uncirculated: $80

These are catalog values. Use our Important Terminology page to learn how to properly interpret them.

Requester description: 1873 Front of Coin: Wording around perimeter: Franz Joseph I. Kaiser V. Osterreich. Konig V. Bohmen Etc., Apost. Konig V. Ungarn with side profile of man with laurel wreath on his head. Bald forehead, thick sideburn beard and mustache. No hair on chin. Back of coin: 2. December 1873 in center with laurl ;eaves tied on bottom with ribbon. Left side leaves are long, tapered leaves; right side leaves resemble oak leaves. Not sure of this was a coin turned into a medal or if it is just a medal. It has a formed loop on top of the coin with a steel ring in the loop to hang on a cord or chain. Appears to be silver but not sure if it really is or maybe is a combination of silver and some other metal(s). Coin has some light wear and small spots/stains, one larger one behind ear of man on front.
