Belgium 20 and 50 Francs 1949 to 1955
Belgium 20 and 50 Francs 1949 to 1955

These are coins with interesting designs. On one side of the coin you can see a Belgian lion standing left supported on a stone tablet with inscription LEX (which means 'law' in Latin) that symbolises Belgian constitution. Along the left edge is BELGIQUE ('Belgium' in French) or BELGIE ('Belgium' in Dutch). On the other side of the coin is a head of mythological god Mercury facing right.

20 FRANCS: 0.2148 troy ounces silver
50 FRANCS: 0.3356 troy ounces silver

To find the base value (BV) of your coin, multiply the current price of silver, found on web sites such a kitcosilver.com by 0.2148 or by 0.3356. At this writing, the price of silver is $17.26 US dollars per troy ounce (it changes daily, so look it up). The base value of a 20 franc coin is 0.2148 x 17.26 = $3.70 US dollars, and of a 50 franc coin is 0.3356 x 17.26 = $5.80. The base value is often called the melt value of the coin, because it represents how much the coin would be worth if you melted it with a blow torch.

'Medal alignment' has to do with how the patterns on the front and back of the coin are related. Hold the coin between your thumb and index finger, with your thumb on the bottom and index finger on the top. Now turn the coin from left to right, like you are turning a page in a book. If the pattern on the back is right side up, you have a coin with 'medal alignment.' If it is up side down, you have a coin with normal 'coin alignment.'
