Australia 5 Cents (with Echidna) 1966 to 1984
Australia 5 Cents (with Echidna) 1966 to 1984

On the reverse you can see a very cute echidna. They live in Australia and New Guinea and are the only extant mammals that lay eggs. The echidnas are named after the 'Mother of monsters' in Greek mythology, by association with her being half woman and half snake, as the animal was perceived to have qualities of both mammals and reptiles.

Typical catalog values for the echidna 5 cents are:

for coins before 1975
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $2
well preserved: $4
fully uncirculated: $8

for coins after 1974
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: $1
fully uncirculated: $2

Coins dated 1972 are somewhat rare. The catalog value starts $9 US dollars in average circulated condition and go up to $35 US dollars for coins in uncirculated condition.
