Colombia 10 and 20 Centavos 1897
Colombia 10 and 20 Centavos 1897

Nice coin, Jon. Miss Liberty (Libertad) is on the front and the coat of arms of Colombia (with a condor) is on the back. These coins are made of 66.6 percent pure silver. They contain:

10 (DIEZ) CENTAVOS: 0.054 troy ounces silver
20 (VEINTE) CENTAVOS: 0.107 troy ounces silver

These coins can never be worth less than their silver content, so even a totally smashed coin (scratched, stained, cleaned, mutilated) is worth its weight in silver. But, collectors pay premiums for nice looking specimens:

worn: $3 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $4
well preserved: $7
fully uncirculated: $12

worn: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $8
well preserved: $12
fully uncirculated: $22

As always on CoinQuest, and in most catalogs and coin web sites, the prices above a catalog prices. Actual buy and sell prices are lower. Be sure to read our Important Terminology page to learn how to estimate actual price from catalog price.

This has been quite an eye opener! I have spent my money on garbage. Oh dear! - John Skelly
Sad to say, there are many shysters in the coin business. My guess is that about 10 percent of coin dealers are dishonest, selling coins for more than they are worth, and buying coins for less than they are worth. This site is my answer to help straighten things out a little, but it is a daunting task. Never buy a coin from someone you do not trust. Always have an idea of approximate value whenever your buy or sell a coin. - CoinQuest (Paul)
