There is a great write-up on these auto dollars over at ChineseCoins.com. The article covers all sorts of neat background information, and has a good picture of this neat coin. CoinQuest disagrees, however, with their lofty estimates of value.
Comparing catalog prices with recent auction results, here are our estimates of value. None of them are too shabby!
worn: $500 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $3000
well preserved: $7000
fully uncirculated: $15000
The coin in our main picture (upper left) is currently at auction by Stacks Bowers and Ponterio. Why don't you place a bid on it? There is no chance that it could be a fake, because Stacks Bowers and Ponterio are world-famous numismatists. But, how about the PCGS slabbed fake in the picture from CoinForgeryEBay? With such valuable coins, crooks are willing to spend tons of money making very believable fakes. Don't get caught. They even produce fake slabs to make their fake coins look official!
As always, CoinQuest is indebted to Stacks Bowers and Ponterio for use of their coin image. Be sure to checkout the fabulous work done by CoinForgeryEBay.
