Lithuania (Lietuva) Modern Centu Coinage 1991 to Date
Lithuania (Lietuva) Modern Centu Coinage 1991 to Date

Lithuania became independent in 1990 and started issuing new coinage as a republic in 1991. Fortunately, they kept the neat horse-and-knight arms on their modern coinage, just as it appeared on earlier coinage.

The modern small-denomination coins are:

1 CENTAS: 1991 only, aluminum
2 CENTAI: 1991 only, aluminum
5 CENTAI: 1991 only, aluminum
10 CENTU: 1997 to 2000, brass
10 CENTU: 2003 to date, nickel-brass
20 CENTU: 1991 to 2000, brass
20 CENTU: 2003 to date, nickel-brass
50 CENTU: 1991 to 2000, brass
50 CENTU: 2003 to date, nickel-brass

Just about all of these coins carry low value. They are modern coins made out of non-precious metal, so their value is low, as follows:

1 CENTAS, 2 AND 5 CENTAI, 10, 20, AND 50 CENTU:
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: less than $1
fully uncirculated: $1

A few of these coins are slighly more valuable. The 10, 20, and 50 centu minted in 1991 use a different pattern than after 1991. These carry small premiums:

10, 20, 50 CENTU DATED 1991
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: $1
fully uncirculated: $5

Also, post-2002 nickel-brass versions of the 10, 20, and 50 centu are available only in sets, not in circulation. These are more valuable by a few US dollars.

All the values on this page are catalog values. Be sure you understand how catalog values work. See our Important Terminology page.
