Ancient Greece (Catana, Sicily) Tetradrachm with River God Amenanos (Fakes are possible) 466BC
Ancient Greece (Catana, Sicily) Tetradrachm with River God Amenanos (Fakes are possible) 466BC

The amazing coin in our main picture (upper left) comes from Numismatica ARS Classica where it sold (are you ready?) for $17000 US dollars during a 2015 auction.

The coin comes from Catana in Sicily and shows Amenanos the river god as a man-headed, bearded bull with stork and fish. The reverse shows Nike with an inscription KATANE.

With a $17000 price tag, these are obviously very rare coins. Price goes up or down with wear, damage, and eye appeal.

Fakes, of course, abound. The one in our secondary picture (to the right) is a modern look-alike sold in novelty shops. It is worth a few dollars.

CoinQuest thanks ARS Classica for use of their coin photo. It is a beauty!
