France (Equatorial Africa) 50 Centimes and 1 Franc 1942 and 1943
France (Equatorial Africa) 50 Centimes and 1 Franc 1942 and 1943

France did not have territorial acquisition in mind when it started occupying the coast regions of west-central Africa (Congo, Chad, Gabon and adjacent areas today) in the early 1800s. Combating the slave trade was the primary purpose. The French colonies that minted coins remained in place until the 1960s. Coinage of 1942 and 1943 bore the rooster and cross pattern:

50 CENTIMES: brass and bronze, 20 mm diameter
1 FRANC: brass, 26 mm diameter
