Nepal 5 and 10 Paisa with Cow 1966 to 1971
Nepal 5 and 10 Paisa with Cow 1966 to 1971

These are small denomination coins from Nepal:

5 PAISA: aluminum
10 PAISA: brass

You have to know two things to transform the date on the coin to a Western (Gregorian) date. First, you have to know the numeric characters, shown here. (There are others found on Nepalese coins which are not in our figure.) Then you have to know that Nepalese coins use three different dating systems: the NS and SE systems before 1888AD, and the Vikrama Samvat (VS) system after. (This is an oversimplification.) To find the AD date from the VS date, subtract 57 years, so a date that looks like 2029 (with a lazy-looking 9) is, after numeral conversion, actually a Nepalese date of 2027. This corresponds to Western date 1970.

With one exception, values for these coins are quite low, as follows:

worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: $1
fully uncirculated: $3

The exception is the 1968 10 paisa, which has a 2025 Nepalese date. The catalogs report

10 PAISA DATED 2025 (1968AD)
worn: $5 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $10
well preserved: $15
fully uncirculated: $20
