Italy (Genoa) 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, and 4 Scudo 1638 to 1719

These are rare and beautiful coins from the old Italian state of Genoa. There are many (very many) variations of this coin, so we can only give very general guidance in our simple CoinQuest forum. If you have a nice-looking example, you have a valuable piece. Read this page, then do your own research and seek out a professional numismatist or knowledgeable collector

DO NOT CLEAN YOUR COIN. CLEANING RUINS VALUE.

The coin in our picture comes from Numismatica Ranieri in Bologna, Italy, where it sold for 1500 euros (about $1650 US dollars) during a 2010 auction. CoinQuest thanks Ranieri for use of their coin photo. It is a beauty!

The patterns and inscriptions on the variations are roughly the same, but not exactly. Here is a summary:

1/4 SCUDO: about 20 mm diameter, about 9 grams
1/2 SCUDO: about 35 mm diameter, about 18 grams
SCUDO: about 40 mm diameter, about 36 grams
2 SCUDI: about 55 mm diameter, about 76 grams
4 SCUDI: about 60 mm diameter, about 150 grams

Very, very rough values for all dates run like this:

1/4 SCUDO
worn: $50 US dollars approximate catalog
average circulated: $200
well preserved: $400

1/2 SCUDO
worn: $50 US dollars approximate catalog
average circulated: $200
well preserved: $400

SCUDO
worn: $80 US dollars approximate catalog
average circulated: $300
well preserved: $600

2 SCUDI
worn: $300 US dollars approximate catalog
average circulated: $1300
well preserved: $2600

4 SCUDI
worn: $1300 US dollars approximate catalog
average circulated: $5000
well preserved: $10000

We have not been able to find examples of counterfeit coins, but we would be surprised if they did not exist. Please be sure to apply plenty of careful research if you have a coin like this.
