South Africa (Griquatown) Penny 1890
South Africa (Griquatown) Penny 1890

The London Missionary Society established a station and colony in the South African city known as Girquatown. The dove on the back of this coin is the society's emblem. The coin is actually a 'pattern' coin produced as a trial piece, but never entered into circulation. There is a good write-up on these coins at [PRESS HERE].

As to value, these coin show up at auction from time to time and we have compiled results from those auctions to provide these approximate catalog values:

worn: $200 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $600
well preserved: $1500
fully uncirculated: $2500

The coin in our picture comes from Heritage Auctions. It has dazzling red surfaces with zero wear and sold during a 2016 auction for $2800. CoinQuest thanks Heritage for use of their coin photo. It is a beauty!

If you have a nice-looking example of this coin, DO NOT CLEAN IT (cleaning ruins value), and seek information from a professional numismatic dealer. You can find top-notch coin dealers at PNG Dealers.
