Germany 5 Reichsmark 1927 to 1933
Germany 5 Reichsmark 1927 to 1933

Look at the beautiful coin in the picture. It comes from Detlev Holscher in Enger, Germany. This coin is worth about $350 US dollars. The reason it is so valuable is that the coin is in uncirculated condition, or nearly uncirculated. The catalog value of this coin is about $450, so Detlev's price goes right along with CoinQuest's definition of catalog value, shown on our Terminology page. Please be sure to read the Important Terminology page.

All the dates in this 5 reichsmark series are quite valuable. We divide them into three categories:

EXTRA VALUABLE: 1930E, F, G, J, and 1933J:
worn: $300 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $800
well preserved: $1200
fully uncirculated: $2500
the 1930E and 1933J are at the top of this group, $2000+ in well preserved condition

VERY VALUABLE: 1929E, 1930D:
worn: $150 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $400
well preserved: $550
fully uncirculated: $1500

VALUABLE: all other dates and mint marks:
worn: $50 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $110
well preserved: $250
fully uncirculated: $450

If you have a nice-looking 5 reichsmark like this you should take it to a knowledgeable collector or professional coin dealer for an in-person appraisal. This applies to all dates, not just the 'extra' and 'very' valuable ones.

I'd like to know (Dealer Buying) price range for the 1930 F, 5 mark coin above in XF rated condition. This coin was passed down to me by my friend's Father, who was a German Officer/ Message Delivery / Motorcycle Driver in WW2. - Zigton3/Yahoo
We cleaned up our page, Zigton, and made it easier to read. If your 1930F coin has been graded at XF by a professional or very knowledgeable numismatist, then the catalog value is about $1200 US dollars. If the coin has spots, stains, scratches, cleanings, nicks, gouges, or other damage, then the catalog value goes way down, probably to $200 or so. Coin dealers usually pay about one-half of catalog value for coins they buy from the general public. If you would like to send us a picture, we can give you a decent estimate for your specific coin. I'd like to know the value of a 1930 E in MS 63 graded by NGC - Mytidawg
Hi, MD -- It's worth a bundle. The Krause catalog quotes $2200 US dollars in XF and $5700 in BU. The NGC price guide [PRESS HERE] acknowledges the coin as 'rare' but does not give any estimates of value. The only one we could find with recent price realized is this nice specimen from Kunker which sold for 3200 euros, about $3500 USD, in a 2015 auction. The Kunker coin is not slabbed or graded, but MS63 looks about right. If your coin looks bright and frosty, it would probably garner more. Nice! If you have pictures of your specific coin, we can forward them to a world-renowned numismatist for his expert opinion. Use the Contact link at the top of the home page to start an e-mail exchange to send pictures. - CoinQuest (Paul)
