Token: France Jetons (General Values)
Jetons are tokens (not coins) used during the middle ages and afterward for games, counting, and commerce. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, often from France, and some bear truly beautiful artwork. There is a terrific article on jetons by the Chicago Coin Club (click here for article) that develops their history and use in much detail. You can visit sites such as CoinPeople.com which run numismatic forums with large numbers of very skilled people.
If you go on eBay and do a search on 'jeton' you can get an idea of the going price of such items. Common specimens are worth a few US dollars. The specialized web sites mentioned above carry some exquisite pieces, and these can command $100 price tags from serious exonumia collectors.
'Exonumia' is a branch of collecting that specializes in tokens and medals, i.e., objects that look like coins but are not legal tender.
