Norway 1/2 and 1 Specie Daler 1776 to 1785
These grand old Scandinavian coins from Norway come in two denominations: 1/2 Specie Daler and 1 Specie Daler. The patterns are the same, except the 1/2 Specie Daler shows a '1/2 SP' on the side with the monogram. Both of these series are valuable due to low mintages and low survival rates, but, as always, one must be careful of counterfeits. Buy only from trusted sources!
The Krause catalogs list these wit the following values: 1/2 SPECIE DALER (34 mm diameter) worn: $25 US dollars catalog value average circulated: $70 well preserved (like our picture): $150 1 SPECIE DALER (42 mm diameter) worn: $40 US dollars catalog value average circulated: $130 well preserved (like our picture): $280 The coin in our picture comes from Munzen Muller in Lüneburg, Germany, and CoinQuest thanks Muzen Muller for use of their coin image. In addition to the counterfeit warning above, be advised that the values shown in the lists above are catalog values. Actual values are usually lower, as explained on our Important Terminology page (link at upper left).
