Chile 20 Centavos, 50 Centavos and 1 Peso 1862 to 1891 Nice coin, jmjkks. That's a big old condor, a bird you see on most Chilean coins. The peso contains 0.7234 troy ounces of silver, so that makes it valuable from the get-go. Look up the current value of silver at kitco.com, multiply it by 0.7234, and that is the basic value of jmjkks's coin. The 20 and 50 centavos pieces carry the same design and the silver content is proportionately less. There are 100 centavos in one peso.

There are similar designs for Chilean coins, but this page applies to coins with the condor and feathered shield designs shown in our photo.

In addition to basic silver value, there is collector value added to these coins. Here is what the catalogs quote for just about every date in these series of coins, except as noted:

20 CENTAVOS
worn: $3 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $6
well preserved: $10
fully uncirculated: $50
20 centavos dated 1879 are more rare and catalog for $150 in average circulated condition

50 CENTAVOS

50 centavos dated 1867 are more rare and catalog for $90 in average circulated condition

PESO

pesos dated 1887 are very rare and catalog for $750 in average circulated condition

These are approximate catalog values. Use our Important Terminology page to convert them to actual values.
