Russia Polushka, Denga, and Kopek 1850 to 1855
Russia Polushka, Denga, and Kopek 1850 to 1855

Most of these old copper coins from the Russian Empire are pretty well worn to a frazzle these days. If you find a nice example, like the one in our picture, it commands respectable collector value.

The Russian system of money uses 100 kopeks in one rouble. The Russian letters that look like KOHbNKA spell 'kopek' and the coin in our photo is a one kopek coin. There are two other smaller denominations which look almost identical, but differ in size, as follows:

1 POLUSHKA = 1/4 KOPEK: 13 mm diameter
1 DENGA = 1/2 KOPEK: 18 mm diameter
1 KOPEK: 22 mm diameter

There are also 2 and 3 kopek coins in copper from this era, but the pattern looks different than this one.

Approximate catalog values for all the dates in these three series run like this:

POLUSHKA with EM mint mark:
worn: $3 US dollar catalog value
average circulated: $8
well preserved (like our picture): $20

POLUSHKA with BM mint mark:

DENGA with EM mint mark:

DENGA with BM mint mark:

KOPEK with BM mint mark:

These are approximate catalog values. Use our Terminology page to convert catalog value to actual buy and sell values.
