Iraq 1, 2, 4, 10, 20, and 50 Fils 1936 to 1938
Iraq 1, 2, 4, 10, 20, and 50 Fils 1936 to 1938

That is King Ghazi I on the front of this coin. His image appears on several fils denominations between 1 fils (bronze) to 10 fils (nickel with wavy edges) to 50 fils (0.145 troy ounces of silver).

Like most small denomination coins of the modern era, values are low unless a specific coin is in excellent condition from a collector's perspective. The coin in our picture is well preserved, with little wear and even color, and has no distractions such as cleanings, scrapes, scuffs, nicks, or scratches. Such a coin is a good candidate for a collection, and thus someone may want to buy it for a few US dollars.

Use these eastern Arabic numerals to figure out the date and denomination of your specific coin. The coin shown is a 50 fils. Here are some typical catalog values for these coins:

1 FILS (bronze)
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $2
well preserved: $7
fully uncirculated: $20
1 fils dated 1938 are quite common and are worth about one-quarter of these values. If your 1 fils has an I mint mark under the king, values are as shown.

4 FILS (bronze or nickel)
worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $2
well preserved: $7
fully uncirculated: $20
4 fils dated 1938 are quite common and are worth about one-half of these values. If your 4 fils has an I mint mark under the king, values are as shown.

10 FILS (bronze or nickel)
worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $2
well preserved: $5
fully uncirculated: $12
10 fils made of pure nickel and dated 1937 and 1938 are more rare and are worth about twice these values
10 fils made of bronze are quite common and are worth about one-half of these values

20 FILS (0.058 troy ounce silver)
worn: $3 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $4
well preserved: $10
fully uncirculated: $28

50 FILS (0.145 troy ounce silver)
worn: $5 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $6
well preserved: $12
fully uncirculated: $30

All values on this page are inflated catalog values. Please refer to our Terminology page to understand how catalog values work.

Thanks, Esam, for pointing out the deficiency in our page. We have made it better. Mint marked 1938 1 fils catalog:
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $2
well preserved: $7
fully uncirculated: $20

I have a 1938 4 fils coin (it has the Arabic digit for 4 in the middle).
It has a wavy (scalloped) edge and does not have the I mint mark below the king's head.
This 4 fils coin appears to be copper or bronze, not nickel as you have stated below. Is this unusual? Is it copper/bronze or has some strange process made it look like bronze? - Peter
Hi Peter - our mistake! There was indeed also a scalloped-edge, bronze 4 fils coin. In fact, it only comes with the 1938 date. The official mintage is 8 million, and catalogs put their value at $1 USD when average circulated, $15 USD when fully uncirculated. The main article has been corrected. Thanks! - CoinQuest (Chris)
