Canada New Brunswick Half Penny and Penny Tokens 1843 to 1854
Canada New Brunswick Half Penny and Penny Tokens 1843 to 1854

These neat tokens come in two denominations, one penny and half penny, and two dates, 1843 and 1854. The designs are very similar on all these tokens. In general, the one penny tokens are worth somewhat more than the half penny tokens, and the early date is worth somewhat more than the late date. Very roughly:

ONE PENNY TOKENS 1843
worn: $30 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $140
well preserved: $260
fully uncirculated: $750

ONE PENNY TOKENS 1854
worn: $30 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $100
well preserved: $180
fully uncirculated: $550

HALF PENNY TOKENS 1843
worn: $20 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $70
well preserved: $120
fully uncirculated: $450

HALF PENNY TOKENS 1854
worn: $20 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $40
well preserved: $80
fully uncirculated: $250

Except for the stains, the coin in the main picture (upper left) is in decent shape. The details are sharp, which indicates not too much wear, but the stains bring value down a lot. I'd guess it would sell retail about $60 US dollars, and a coin dealer would pay about $25 for it. Without the stains, the value would be much higher.

The image below gives another price comparison for these tokens, which are subject to wild swings in value. The upper coin is a normal-looking 1854 half penny token in average circulated condition. It sold on eBay for $16. In contrast, the the lower coin is a 1843 one penny token, authenticated, graded, and encapsulated by NGC. The coin is a proof (made especially for collectors) graded PR65 with absolutely dazzling eye appeal. It sold for $3000 by Heritage Auctions.
