Italy Parma 1/7, 1/2 Ducato and 1 Ducaton 1784 to 1799
Italy Parma 1/7, 1/2 Ducato and 1 Ducaton 1784 to 1799

You have a fractional ducato or one ducaton from the old Italian State of Parma. Ferdinando di Borbone ruled this town until it was siezed by France and made part of the Napoleonic Empire in 1796. All these coins are quite valuable, especially in well preserved condition like the one in our picture which comes from ASTARTE Coins and Fine Art in Lugano, Switzerland.

The design of the coin changes slightly over the life of the series, so your coin may not look precisely like Astarte's coin, but it will look similar, especially with the bust of Ferdinando and the inscriptions.

The catalogs assign good values to these coins, with all the dates roughly equal in value as follows:

1/7 DUCATO (23 mm diameter)
worn: $100 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $500
well preserved: $800

1/2 DUCATO (28 mm diameter)
worn: $100 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $500
well preserved: $1200

1 DUCATON (40 mm diameter)
worn: $100 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $700
well preserved: $1600

As always, you must be careful of counterfeit coins, so a coin mounted in a PCGS, NGC, ICG, or ANACS holder, purchased from a well-known and reputable dealer is the best bet. Use our Important Terminology page to convert the catalog values above to actual buy and sell values.

There are also gold doppie coins from Parma during this period. They look the same and are much more valuable.
