Canada 5 Cents (Beaver) 1937 to Date
Canada 5 Cents (Beaver) 1937 to Date

The beaver on the back stays the same, but King George is replaced by Queen Elizabeth in 1953. These coins are worth essentially face value. If you go back prior to 1955 they start to pick up collector value when fully uncirculated. Here are some typical catalog values:

1937 to 1947:
average circulated: 25 cents (US)
well preserved: $1 US dollar
fully uncirculated: $10 approximate catalog value

1948 to 1958:
well preserved: 50 cents (US)
fully uncirculated: $3

1959 to date:
fully uncirculated: $1 if you find a collector who wants one

Now the stuff that gets collector juices flowing shows up on a 1947 Canadian nickel. There is a neat variety which has a small dot near the date, instead of the usual maple leaf. You must look closely or use a magnifier. If you have the 'dot' variety, the values go up, like this,

worn: $5
average circulated: $27
well preserved: $60
fully uncirculated: $150
