Canada 5 Cents (Beaver) 1937 to Date
Canada 5 Cents (Beaver) 1937 to Date

The beaver on the back stays the same, but King George is replaced by Queen Elizabeth in 1953. These coins are worth essentially face value. If you go back prior to 1955 they start to pick up collector value when fully uncirculated. Here are some typical catalog values:

1937 to 1947:
average circulated: 25 cents (US)
well preserved: $1 US dollar
fully uncirculated: $10 approximate catalog value

1948 to 1958:
well preserved: 50 cents (US)
fully uncirculated: $3

1959 to date:
fully uncirculated: $1 if you find a collector who wants one

Now the stuff that gets collector juices flowing shows up on a 1947 Canadian nickel. There is a neat variety which has a small dot near the date, instead of the usual maple leaf. You must look closely or use a magnifier. If you have the 'dot' variety, the values go up, like this,

worn: $5
average circulated: $27
well preserved: $60
fully uncirculated: $150

Coin dated 1960 and the front has Elizabeth II. You didn't mention that. I know the date makes it of no real value. Since I am new to this, just wondered when they changed the imprint? Thank You. - E. Noyes
Hello Mr./Ms. Noyes -- Welcome to coin collecting. I started when I was 10 and now I'm almost 70 and still involved. It's a great hobby. -- Our first sentence reads 'The beaver on the back stays the same, but King George is replaced by Queen Elizabeth in 1953.' All coins from the British Commonwealth display the current monarch on the front. - CoinQuest (Paul)

When did it change from a dodecagon to a circle? - Lauren
The last five cent coins with dodecagons were minted in 1962. - CoinQuest (Todd)

I have a 1947 5 cents with no dot or maple leaf, and I would say only a little circulation because it's not very worn. The article says there is usually a maple leaf there, so what does it mean if there is nothing?
Almost certainly you have a coin struck with a filled die. The die (the hard metal piece with the coin pattern) gets filled with grease and details do not appear on the finished coin. Mint workers are supposed to get rid of such coins, but a few get through. Our page on these coins has pictures and general values. See this page [PRESS HERE]. - CoinQuest (Paul)
