Hi,

I do not specialist in authenticating coins, but yes, I can defiantly see worn marks on the coin, such as numerous surface damage on it.

However, from seeing the surface, I do not know if it is a fake, or just a worn and and possibly cleaned coin. The link to the left shows a page that has details of your coin, and its estimated value, if genuine.

Best to wait for another opinion on the matter as I do not typically help out in authentication of items.

1870S US double eagle. Our page on these coins appears at the [coinquest.com] link under Web Reference to the left. On that page you will find background material and approximate value for genuine coins.

Like others here, I would be very careful with this coin. The surfaces look questionable. In the comparison image above, the patterns are identical, but the manufacturing quality of your coin (marked suspect) is much lower than the genuine coin. Details are mushy, and it is not due to wear, which would show only on the high points. The 'mush' is all over the coin, not just the high points. Also, there are severe rim deformities at about 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, and 5:30 o'clock.

An important factor is the weight. A genuine coin weighs exactly 33.436 grams. Ask a jeweler for a precise weight and compare.

You have to go to the Web References that appear on the left of several posts to get the values.

$1500 is the base value, that is, the value of the gold content. If the jeweler determined that it is gold, then that is correct. If it is a fake coin, it is not made out of gold.
